Perth is located in central Scotland, and this is Perth and Kinoross council area’s administrative centre. Perth is also Perthshire’s historic county town.
Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott published the story titled Fair Maid of Perth in 1828, and since then, Perth was famously known as The Fair City. There were other names given to the city like St John’s Toun or Saint Johnstoun, and this name was in reference to the principal church honouring St John the Baptist.
Several places all around the world were named after Perth. Some of these places include Western Australia’s Perth, Perth in Ontario, Canada and Tasmania’s Perth. Perth is also twinned with the German state of Bavaria’s Aschaffenburg.

A brief history of Perth
A Pictish word meaning wood/copse is where Perth’s name cameform. The place was initially known as St John’s Toun or Saint Johnstoun because of the church honouring St John the Baptist which can be found in the parish’s centre. This name was known until the mid-1600s. The wider area was called Perthia which then became Perth Shyre.
There are retrieved and recorded evidence from the area that supports the claim that early settlements have existed in Perth. They believe that these people were Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. Farming was then introduced during 4000 BC.
Perth’s importance resulted from the presence of Scone. The royal court’s frequent residence made Perth Scotland’s effective capital. After some time, King William the Lion gave the city a Royal Burgh status in the 12th century.
Perth was a rich trading burgh in the 12th and 13th centuries. Some goods were traded with France.
However, in 1209, a flood destroyed the royal castle. This has greatly affected Perth. The castle was never rebuilt, leaving Perth protected only with an inventive water system and partial walls.
In 1296, King Edward I brought his armies to the city. The city fell this time, and the English immediately implemented stronger fortifications. In 1312, Robert the Bruce recaptured Perth.
The assassination of King James I of Scotland also happened in Perth in 1437. Scone Abbey was sacked in 1559. Presbyterianism remained strong in the city even when Marie de Guise and her daughter Mary, Queen of Scots successfully stopped the riot happening that time.
Perth Academy was founded in 1760. When it comes to exportation, more gods were included, and the major exports include linen, whisky, bleached products, and linen.
Perth had its first railway in 1848. Electric trams also shortly replaced horse-drawn carriages which were popular in the 1890s.
